Dr. Alexander C.J. van Akkooi, MD, PhD was born in Bridgeport, Connecticut on the 16th of April 1981 (40 years old). He has both American as Dutch nationalities. He is currently a staff consultant melanoma and soft tissue sarcoma surgical oncologist, practicing at the Netherlands Cancer Institute – Antoni van Leeuwenhoek (NCI-AVL) in Amsterdam, the Netherlands since 2015. He gained his MD title in 2008 and obtained his PhD cum laude in 2011 on the thesis: “Sentinel Node Tumor Load Assessment in Melanoma: Dilemmas and Clinical Management”. He is the immediate past-Chairman of the EORTC (European Organization for Research and Treatment of Cancer) Melanoma Group. Dr. van Akkooi published over 170 peer reviewed papers (H index 28) in some high impact journals (i.e. NEJM, Lancet, Lancet Oncol, Cell, Nature Med) and has presented at numerous (international) meetings. He has accepted the position of head of melanoma surgery at Melanoma Institute Australia (MIA) and that of associate professor at University of Sydney (USYD) and will commence work there early 2022.
