Título

Deaths from malignant liver and intrahepatic bile duct neoplasms in patients in the state of São Paulo: An epidemiological profile from 2012 to 2022.

Introdução

Malignant neoplasms of the liver and intrahepatic bile ducts, combined, are the third leading cause of cancer death worldwide. In Brazil, the estimated rate is 4.95 cases per 100,000 inhabitants annually for the 2023-2025 triennium, according to WHO. In São Paulo, mortality from these neoplasms follows the national average but shows significant variations depending on the region and local socioeconomic factors.

Objetivo

To analyze the epidemiological profile of deaths from malignant liver and intrahepatic bile duct neoplasms in the state of São Paulo from 2012 to 2022.

Métodos

This research adopts a quantitative, retrospective, and descriptive approach, using data collected from the Mortality Information System (SIM) database and TABNET (DATASUS) from the Ministry of Health to identify and discuss the epidemiological profile of deaths due to malignant liver and intrahepatic bile duct neoplasms, under ICD C22. The eligibility criterion was data from 2012-2022 in São Paulo. No significant exclusion criteria were applied. The variables investigated were: number of deaths, age range, and biological sex.

Resultados

As of June 2024, a total of 66 deaths were recorded. Of these, 44 were men and 22 were women. Most deaths occurred among people aged 75 to 79 years, with 15 cases. In the 65 to 69 years age range, there were 13 deaths. For those aged 50 to 64 years, deaths were more evenly distributed, ranging between 6 and 9 per age group. Among younger individuals, there was a lower incidence, with only 1 death recorded between 40 and 44 years.

Conclusões

The analysis of deaths from malignant liver and intrahepatic bile duct neoplasms in São Paulo (2012-2022) reveals higher mortality in men and individuals over 65 years old. The variation by age and sex indicates the need for targeted interventions. These findings underscore the importance of policies focused on prevention and early diagnosis, crucial for improving disease control strategies considering regional and socioeconomic particularities.
