INFLUENCE OF TUMOR LATERALITY ON THE QUALITY OF LIFE OF PATIENTS WITH COLORECTAL CANCER UNDERGOING TREATMENT AT A REFERRAL ONCOLOGY HOSPITAL IN AMAZONAS

Introdução

Globally, colorectal cancer (CCR) is the third most common malignant neoplasm, being present in large proportions in developed and developing countries. In Brazil, the estimated number of new cases of colon and rectal cancer for each year of the 2023-2025 triennium is 45,630 cases, with the North Region having the third highest incidence. Furthermore, the location of the primary tumor plays a prognostic role in metastatic colon cancer, which can alter the quality of life of patients.

Objetivo

The aim of the study was to investigate the influence of tumor laterality on the quality of life of patients with colorectal cancer undergoing treatment at a reference oncology hospital in Amazonas.

Métodos

The sample consisted of 140 participants diagnosed with colorectal cancer, of both sexes, from the states of the Legal Amazon. The instruments for data collection were the QLQ-C30 and QLQ-C29 questionnaires, developed by the European Organization for Research and Treatment of Cancer (EORTC) quality of life study group. This investigation was conducted at a public reference cancer center hospital in Manaus, Amazonas – Brazil The project was approved by the Ethics Committee – Approval Number: 52343821.2.0000.0004.

Resultados

Tumors located on the left side of the intestine were the most common, with 98 patients (70%), with females being the most common, accounting for 55 (72%) patients with these characteristics. In addition, regarding deaths, 18 (18%) patients with cancer on the left side and 3 (14%) with cancer on the right side died.
In addition, limitations in the performance of daily activities, such as exercise and walking, were noted, with realization being the most common symptom, especially when located on the right side. Similarly, gastrointestinal changes were presented in the entire sample, in which patients with cancer on the right side reported a higher frequency of intestinal bleeding, diarrhea and palpable mass, while those on the left side presented constipation and stringy stools with blood and mucus.
Finally, psychological changes such as irritability, tension, anxiety and depressive episodes were highlighted, as well as financial issues. Furthermore, regarding the perception of quality of life, 58 (60%) of the patients with a tumor on the left and 15 (71%) on the right classified it as “good” or “excellent”.

Conclusões

In line with the literature, colorectal cancer had a higher incidence in the left large intestine (70%) compared to the right (15%), predominating in females, although the right side is more common in men and has a higher mortality rate. Furthermore, clinically, patients with tumors on the left side report more constipation and fibrous stools. Finally, despite the difficulties of the disease, most patients evaluated their quality of life as "good" or "excellent", highlighting resilience and family support.
