Psycho-Oncology and Psychosocial Rehabilitation, significant factors for restructuring the individual after cancer treatment

Introdução

Oncological treatments can negatively impact several areas of quality of life related to patients' mental and physical health, and although side effects are more intense during the period of interventions, such as chemotherapy and radiotherapy, they also extend into the post-procedure period, making it difficult for patients who have experienced the entire oncological journey to get their lives back on track.

Objetivo

To analyze the needs and concerns faced by oncological patients after cancer treatment and identify the main themes studied by Psycho-Oncologists in the care experienced by patients.

Métodos

Literature review through the electronic database PubMed, carried out in August 2024, using the descriptors: “Psychosocial Rehabilitation” and “Psycho-oncology” between the years 2019 and 2024.

Resultados

Eleven scientific articles were identified that addressed the theme “Psychosocial Rehabilitation” and “Psycho-Oncology” simultaneously. Within these studies, no descriptions were identified regarding the study profile such as: specific population, type of cancer or age group. Eight out of eleven articles discussed the importance of an intervention aimed at Psychosocial Rehabilitation carried out by the Psycho-Oncology professional in an interdisciplinary, integrated, expanded and qualified manner.

Conclusões

There is a significant gap in the study and intervention of psychosocial rehabilitation. Despite the growing record of positive results from cancer treatments, the use of innovative interventions such as Car-T Cell and increased survival rates, care aimed at helping this population to resume their lives, with quality and in an integral way, through social rehabilitation programmes using psycho-oncological techniques, still needs further study and improvement.
