Título
Exploring pediatric oncology: a learning journey in the multiprofessional residency in oncology
Introdução
The malignancies that affect children and adolescents are a diverse scenario and have different characteristics when compared to the cancers that affect the adult population. The multiprofessional residency in oncology aims to introduce professionals to integrated care for cancer patients and make them specialists. Therefore, in addition to caring for adult patients, immersion in the world of pediatrics is necessary to better prepare these professionals.
Objetivo
To describe the experience of second-year nursing residents during their internships in pediatric oncology, showing the relevance of working in oncology in a wide variety of scenarios.
Métodos
This is a narrative report describing the experience in pediatric oncology in the second year of a multiprofessional residency in oncology nursing, in 2024, described by resident nurses. The scenario of the reports is based on the experiences from four different units, including the pediatric oncology ICU, the pediatric oncology emergency department, the pediatric oncology and adolescent and young adult inpatient units, and the pediatric chemotherapy outpatient clinic.
Resultados
The opportunity to learn about the caring process in a wide variety of pediatric contexts improves technical and scientific skills. The rotations are splitted up throughout the second year of residency, along with the theoretical classes in pediatrics, so the contact with the area is more targeted and focused on the resident's learning process. The experience allows them to develop autonomy and clinical reasoning, to take ownership of chemotherapy protocols focused on pediatric cancers, with a view to managing adverse effects and providing health education for patients and their families. They also experience perioperative care, as well as exams and treatments such as hematopoietic cell transplants, implementing specialized measures and care. In addition, they come into contact with frequent childhood illnesses that affect patients, allowing them to learn the fundamentals of pediatric nursing and how to act appropriately with this type of patient.
Conclusões
Acting beyond adult oncology care, with a focus on pediatrics, allows the resident to improve technical and scientific skills, and develop specific care for children and adolescents, preparing them for the job market, a differential from other oncology residencies, in which the work is limited to the care of a single age group. Experience in pediatrics is unique and the opportunity to work in scenarios focused on this population has transformative potential.
