Título

The Educational Level of Survivors of Central Nervous System Tumors Treated at a Pediatric Cancer Specialized Hospital

Introdução

Introduction: The treatment of cancer in children and adolescents has advanced significantly, with survival rates increasing from approximately 50% in the mid-1970s to over 85% in recent years. Central nervous system neoplasms, in particular, are the most common solid tumors in children and adolescents up to the age of 19.

Objetivo

Objective: To evaluate the impact of cancer treatment on the education of patients who have survived central nervous system tumors and were treated at the A.C. Camargo Cancer Center, located in São Paulo, Brazil.

Métodos

Method: This is a cross-sectional, retrospective, descriptive, and qualitative case study. Data collection was conducted through an electronic questionnaire with multiple-choice questions, as well as a diary containing the dialogues of parents or guardians of survivors of central nervous system tumors who were unable to answer the questionnaire. The diary was filled out during phone calls made throughout the data collection period. Data analysis was performed by describing the descriptive percentage data and conducting Bardin's content analysis.

Resultados

Results: There was a tendency for the educational level of children and adolescents affected by central nervous system tumors not to keep pace with the current school curriculum. In addition, their learning was more compromised; they are often affected by chronic diseases and, as a result, are kept away from their original schools for long periods due to illnesses that require medical care.

Conclusões

Conclusion: Patients with central nervous system tumors, while undergoing treatment, distance themselves from social interactions and, consequently, from the school environment, which can impact their academic progress. Hospital classes provide support for sick students during difficult times. Even when they experience significant curricular delays, the social relationships within the school environment are preserved.
