THE IMPACT OF ONCOGENETICS ON EDUCATIONAL TRAINING FOR GENERAL PHYSICIANS: THE PIONEERING OF ACCAMARGO AND LACOGG (ACADEMIC LEAGUE OF ONCOGENETICS AND ONCOGENOMICS)

Introdução

Oncogenetics is a field that is constantly evolving and holds great promise for the future of medicine. In Brazil, multidisciplinary care in oncogenetics has historically received little attention from both the public and private health systems, and it is known that this reality, currently changing, is reflected in the basic knowledge of genetics and oncology subjects received in medical schools in the country.

Objetivo

This study focuses on describing and reporting the experiences analyzed since the beginning of the project in 2021 until the 2024 management, the impacts and changes in the theoretical-practical study of oncogenetics in the training of students from different courses.

Métodos

Through forms sent to students for the group's statistical survey, questions about the content of oncology and genetics and also about previous experiences during graduation, as well as evaluations of projects developed by the league and reports of experiences lived by students during the Specifics at ACCamargo itself with the doctors and residents responsible for the oncogenetics service, the information was grouped and a cross-sectional study was carried out with the data combined with an experience report, in order to understand the achievements and challenges that the league and its members face with the project, evaluating the profile of related changes based on the collection of indirect data carried out by the 2022, 2023 and 2024 administrations.

Resultados

The profile of the league's students is mostly concentrated in undergraduate medical students, as well as other health and biological courses, with an interest in learning more about oncogenetics. In 2022, a form was used to assess the students' prior knowledge and 188 students, 54.2% of whom were medical students (N = 102), 19% reported that they had not had any content on oncology or oncogenetics during their undergraduate course (36), 12.7% responded that they had had “almost nothing” about oncology and oncogenetics during their undergraduate course (24), 14.7% responded that they had had content on oncology and oncogenetics, but incompletely (27), 9.5% (18) responded that they had had content on oncology and oncogenetics and considered it to be complete. The majority of medical students who answered the questionnaire were in their first year of medicine, 44.11% in the 1st year (45), followed by 33.3% in the 2nd year (34), 14.5% in the 3rd year (15) and 2.9% in the 4th year (3).

Conclusões

Therefore, the creation of an academic league on oncogenetics clearly demonstrated the importance and lack of this area in the training of health professionals, as well as the enormous interest of students in the subject, due to the demographic change in the country and the epidemiological profile of the population, added to the increase in the prevalence of chronic-degenerative diseases, such as cancer.
