Título

A REGIONAL ANALYSIS OF THE NUMBER OF CASES OF COLON AND RECTOSIGMOID JUNCTION CANCER TREATED WITH CHEMOTHERAPY OVER FIVE YEARS

Introdução

Malignant neoplasms of the colon and rectosigmoid junction are highly prevalent diseases, particularly among men and older individuals. In addition to surgical resection, adjuvant chemotherapy plays a crucial role in the treatment of these cancers, helping to reduce recurrence rates and improve clinical outcomes.

Objetivo

To identify the number of cases of malignant neoplasms of the colon and rectosigmoid junction treated with chemotherapy over four years (2019-2023) across the regions of Brazil.

Métodos

This is a quantitative, descriptive, and retrospective epidemiological study of cases of malignant neoplasms of the colon and rectosigmoid junction, conducted through data extraction from the Brazilian Unified Health System's Informatics Department (DATASUS), covering the period from 2019 to 2023. The study included individuals aged 35 to 69 years who underwent 91 days or more of chemotherapy treatment in different regions of Brazil. The data were tabulated, and graphs and tables were created.

Resultados

The collected data identified a total of 11,758 cases of malignant neoplasms of the colon and rectosigmoid junction treated in Brazil from 2019 to 2023, with 10,355 treated with chemotherapy. Regarding the regional distribution of oncological patients treated with chemotherapy, approximately half resided in the Southeast (50.66%), while the South, Northeast, Central-West, and North Regions represented 20.61%, 18.92%, 5.9%, and 3.8% of the total, respectively. Analyzing the number of cases under treatment in each region revealed similar values to those of resident cases. The Southeast Region had 5,236 resident cases and 5,279 cases under treatment, the South had 2,131 resident cases and 2,128 cases under treatment. The region with the largest discrepancy was the Central-West, with 618 resident cases and 575 cases under treatment.

Conclusões

There is a predominance of cases of malignant neoplasms of the colon and rectosigmoid junction in the Southeast, consistent with the absolute population of this region. However, despite the Northeast having a larger population than the South, it has fewer cases, indicating possible disparities in diagnostic programs. The similar numbers of resident and treated cases in each region suggest equitable access to treatment.
