INCORPORATING OF PRACTICAL INTERNSHIPS IN ONCOGENETICS AND ONCOGENOMICS IN MEDICAL STUDENT TRAINING: A REPORT FROM THE PARTNERSHIP BETWEEN AC CAMARGO AND THE ACADEMIC LEAGUE OF ONCOGENETICS AND ONCOGENOMICS (LACOGG)

Introdução

Oncogenetics is a recent field in Brazil, with genetic tests covered by health insurance only since 2015. Despite this advance, we are still behind developed countries. Early diagnosis is crucial in cancer prognosis, but the theme is rarely addressed during training of general practitioners due to its low applicability in the SUS. LACOGG was founded to democratize knowledge in the field, providing internships at the Oncogenetics Department at AC Camargo.

Objetivo

With this study we aim to put into practice the theoretical content acquired in LACOGG’S monthly classes by incorporating non-mandatory internships for members followed by analyzing their contribution to the general medical training of the participants.

Métodos

The non-mandatory and observational internship was planned in 2021 by the board of the Academic League of Oncogenetics and Oncogenomics (LACOGG) alongside with the Head of the Oncogenetics Department at ACCamargo. The internship began only in 2022 due to the COVID-19 epidemic. To date, the internship has had the participation of 18 members over 2 years and currently has 3 other interns in the field. The total credit hours is 40 divided into 8 weeks in different periods of the year. Each student had the opportunity to shadow a medical oncogeneticist in an outpatient setting, in addition to the possibility of getting to know other areas of the service such as the laboratory.

Resultados

During the selected period, each student is assigned to an oncogeneticist from the outpatient clinic. The internship activities included accompanying the doctor in conduction an oncogenetics consultation, observing and applying hard skills in oncogenetics acquired during the league’s theoretical classes such as: collecting and interpreting family history, constructing a pedigree chart, clinical problem-solving in the indication of various genetic tests (genetic panel, exomes, genomes and pharmacogenetics), referral to an oncogeneticist, interpreting the request test, managing VUS (variant of uncertain significance), educating the general population towards oncogenetics, among others. Additionally, students also had the opportunity to develop soft skills such as delivering bad news, sharing and jointly deciding on conduct and providing psychosocial support.

Conclusões

Therefore, the incorporation of an observational internship provided by LACOGG is an extremely important and unique academic experience in the training of our members. Through ir, it was possible to follow and apply foundations of oncogenetics, facilitating the understanding of the topics covered and adding to both the medical and hidden curricula. It is expected that the experience will add on other leagues aiming to add on medical training.
