The Benefits of Reiki Therapy in Supporting Oncology Patients

Introdução

With an integrative approach, Integrative and Complementary Health Practices (PICS) aim to complement conventional treatments. Reiki, a practice using hand imposition over body areas to stimulate natural healing, can alleviate symptoms enhancing the quality of life for patients. Since 2019, Afecc - Hospital Santa Rita has offered Reiki as an Integrative and Complementary Health Practice in Oncology, prompting a study on its impact on the health and psychosocial well-being of cancer patients.

Objetivo

This study, conducted from 2019 to 2023 as part of the project "Study of Oncology Patients Assisted in a Philanthropic Reference Service in Espírito Santo" (CEP 6.508.181), aims to observe Reiki in Oncology, highlight its benefits, understand patient perceptions, and contribute to understanding PICS.

Métodos

This study utilized a case study methodology with weekly Reiki sessions for oncology patients. Data were collected from anamnesis (patient follow-up forms) provided by patients during each appointment. The study focused on various complaints reported by patients such as anxiety, depression, insomnia, low self-esteem, pain, fatigue, sadness, lack of appetite, and nausea, considering the significant life and bodily changes these patients experience. The goal was to assess the impact of Reiki therapy on these conditions, understanding how this integrative practice may aid in managing the emotional and physical challenges faced by oncology patients. The analysis included a comparative review of the data to observe the processes and effects of Reiki, aiming to provide a detailed understanding of its role in oncology care.

Resultados

Reiki therapy demonstrated its effectiveness in addressing various concerns of oncology patients. The study showed significant improvements in reducing stress, anxiety, insomnia, pain, and other complaints reported by patients, highlighting Reiki's positive impact on overall well-being. Patients experienced notable reductions in these afflictions, reflecting the therapy’s benefits for their physical and emotional health. Additionally, the study facilitated greater awareness of Integrative and Complementary Health Practices (PICS) through discussions with patients and professionals, promoting a better understanding of these practices in the oncology setting.

Conclusões

Reiki has proven to be an effective practice in the care of oncology patients. The practice not only addresses specific afflictions such as stress, anxiety, and pain but also significantly enhances overall quality of life, by promoting balance and well-being on physical, emotional, and mental levels, contributing to the integral care of patients. Considering the results, it is observed that this study can contribute to expanding important discussions on Integrative and Complementary Health Practices.
