Inteactions Curcumin with Cancer Treatment

Introdução

Curcumin, a bioactive compound from turmeric, has shown utilized in cancer treatment. However, its interaction with conventional therapies like chemotherapy, targeted therapy, and immunotherapy raises concerns. This review explores how curcumin may interfere with these treatments, potentially reducing their efficacy and impacting patient outcomes, based on key studies including "The dark side of curcumin" and others.

Objetivo

To review and analyze the impact of curcumin on the effectiveness of chemotherapy, targeted therapy, and immunotherapy in cancer treatment. This includes examining potential mechanisms of interference and clinical implications.

Métodos

A comprehensive literature search was conducted using databases such as PubMed, Scopus, and Web of Science. Keywords included "curcumin," "chemotherapy," "targeted therapy," "immunotherapy," and "cancer treatment." Studies were selected based on relevance, publication date, and quality. Key articles included "The dark side of curcumin," "Curcumina e gemcitabina em pacientes com câncer pancreático avançado," "Interaction Between Natural Products and Tamoxifen in Breast Cancer," "Curcumine, Piperina and Capsaicin: A Comparative Study of Spice-Mediated Inhibition of Human Cytochrome P450 Isozyme Activities," and "Phytochemicals That Interfere With Drug Metabolism and Transport, Modifying Plasma Concentration in Humans and Animals." Data extraction focused on curcumin's effects on treatment efficacy, mechanisms of action, and clinical outcomes. Both in vitro and in vivo studies were included to provide a broad perspective.

Resultados

The review identified several studies indicating that curcumin can modulate the efficacy of cancer therapies. In chemotherapy, curcumin was found to either enhance or inhibit drug action depending on the context, as seen in "Curcumina e gemcitabina em pacientes com câncer pancreático avançado."
