Título

ANALYSIS OF THE RESULTS OF TREATMENT OF MALIGNANT TUMORS OF SMALLER SALIVARY GLANDS OF THE ORAL CAVITY

Introdução

The oral cavity is lined with stratified squamous epithelium and is rich in minor salivary glands, an area prone to the development of tumors of these glands. Malignant tumors of the minor salivary glands in the oral cavity are rare, but they represent a heterogeneous group with various histological types, each with unique clinical and pathological characteristics and varying biological behaviors.

Objetivo

The study aimed to analyze the treatment outcomes of patients with malignant tumors of the minor salivary glands in the oral cavity, identifying clinical and pathological characteristics.

Métodos

A retrospective cross-sectional study was conducted, approved by the Institutional Research Ethics Committee, involving the analysis of medical records of patients treated in the Department of Head and Neck Surgery and Otorhinolaryngology at the AC Camargo Cancer Center from 2000 to 2022. Patients were selected based on specific eligibility criteria. Data were collected through a specific form, coded, and entered a computerized database for further analysis.

Resultados

Twenty-eight patients with malignant neoplasms of the minor salivary glands in the oral cavity were identified. Of these 28 patients, 20 (71%) were female and 8 (29%) were male, with a mean age of 48 years, ranging from 15 to 78 years. Three histological subtypes were identified: mucoepidermoid carcinoma (71.4%), adenoid cystic carcinoma (14.3%), and adenocarcinoma (14.3%). The hard palate was the most affected site, representing 50% of patients, followed by the buccal mucosa in 25% of patients. Other affected sites included the tongue, upper and lower lip, and retromolar area. Most patients presented with tumors in the early stages (T1-T2) (71.4%) and without lymph node involvement. The overall survival of the 28 patients at 5 and 10 years was 100% and 87%, respectively.

Conclusões

The study confirmed the rarity of minor salivary gland tumors in the oral cavity. Despite the diversity of histological subtypes, only three types were responsible for the cases analyzed. Mucoepidermoid carcinoma was the most frequent tumor, occurring in half of the cases, predominantly in females and more frequently in the hard palate, with high overall survival.
