Healthcare Professionals' Knowledge Regarding Oncological Care for the Transgender Population: A Scoping Review

Introdução

The lack of data collection on Sexual Orientation and Gender Identity in healthcare instruments hampers the accurate assessment of the real impact of cancer on the transgender and broader LGBTQIAPN+ population. However, evidence suggests that transgender individuals disproportionately face modifiable cancer risk factors. The combination of inadequate cancer screening and increased risk factors leads to a higher incidence of cancer diagnoses at advanced stages, negatively affecting the health prognosis of this marginalized population. The primary challenge for the LGBTQIAPN+ community in accessing healthcare is the fear of discrimination by healthcare professionals, often rooted in previous negative experiences. The literature highlights a general lack of cultural competence among healthcare professionals in dealing with sexual and, particularly, gender minorities.

Objetivo

To identify the available evidence in the literature regarding the instruments/methodologies used to assess healthcare professionals' knowledge of oncological care for the transgender population.

Métodos

A scoping review was conducted following the JBI method and included seven databases, selecting studies that addressed the question: “What is the level of healthcare professionals' knowledge regarding oncological care for the transgender population?”

Resultados

A total of 41 articles were selected that specifically addressed healthcare professionals' knowledge related to caring for the LGBTQIAPN+ population, with a particular focus on the transgender community. Eighteen studies assessed patients' perceptions of professionals' knowledge, while other studies utilized bespoke instruments to evaluate knowledge within the broader context of LGBTQIAPN+ health.

Conclusões

There is no tested and validated instrument specifically designed to assess knowledge of oncological health for the transgender population, underscoring the need for the development and validation of a tool focused on the needs of this population.
