Experience report: Oncologic clinic management across generations

Introdução

The Theogony narrates the origin of the Gods marked by generational quest for power, reflecting the dynamics observed in many families. However, when involving a skin cancer clinic there is no sovereignty, but teamwork. Clearly, the Baby Boomers, with their commitment and work ethic, laid the foundation. Generation X introduced innovation and efficiency, while Generation Y, with its adaptability and use of technology, promoted essential modernizations, ensuring the clinic continuity.

Objetivo

The objective of this experience report is to describe a medical student's perception of the family skin cancer clinic, demonstrating the generational impact of different values and objectives of management, team, and patient relationship practices.

Métodos

The methodology of this experience report is based on the practical experience of a medical student during a six-month internship in a private family clinic of cutaneous oncology. During the clinical part, the student participated in patient care, performing anamnesis, physical examination and discussion of diagnoses. In the surgical experience, followed procedures, from the preparation of patients to the execution of minor surgeries. In particular, in the administrative part, the student can understand the management of the clinic, including appointment scheduling, tax obligations, growth strategy and the importance of communication. Data collection was carried out through the study of direct observations, informal interviews with all professionals involved and periodic meetings with the clinic manager. In view of this, a critical analysis was made of how each generation generated value for the history of the clinic, culminating in the excellent current scenario.

Resultados

The results of this experience report show the significant influence of different generations in the administration of the cutaneous oncology clinic. The Baby Boomers, always thinking about building a solid foundation, sought studying in traditional institutions and working in internationally renowned ones such as the WHO, in addition to having as mentors great names in medicine, such as Doctor Antônio Prudente; established strict administrative practices and humanized service. Generation X, in turn, brought more pragmatic and innovative vision, through international experiences in the search for the improvement of Mohs micrographic surgery and investment in infrastructure optimizing administrative processes. Generation Y, on the other hand, with their desire for growth and their familiarity with technology, drove the modernization of services, invested in greater visibility of the clinic, but always prioritizing the patient experience.

Conclusões

Finally, this generational diversity has resulted in a dynamic work environment, where the exchange of ideas and values has strengthened the team and improved the quality of care. Besides, differences are not a problem, but complementary to solve the patient's problem.
