SOCIODEMOGRAFIC ASPECTS AND CHARACTERIZATION OF NUTRITIONAL STATUS AND OCCURRENCE OF SARCOPENIA IN PATIENTS WITH COLORECTAL CANCER AT AN ONCOLOGY REFERENCE CENTER IN THE STATE OF AMAZONAS

Introdução

Colorectal cancer is the third most diagnosed type of cancer in the world, according to the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC, 2020), it is the third most common tumor in men and the second in women. In terms of mortality, in Brazil in 2020, there were 9,889 deaths (8.4/100 thousand) in men and 10,356 (9.6/100 thousand) in women due to colon and rectal cancer (INCA,2022).

Objetivo

To evaluate the sociodemographic profile and characterise the nutritional status and occurrence of sarcopenia in patients with colorectal cancer treated at the Fundação Centro de Oncologia do Estado do Amazonas (FCECON).

Métodos

This a cross-sectional study carried out at the Fundação Centro de Controle de Oncologia do Estado do Amazonas for nutritional assessment and measurement of sarcopenia in patients with colorectal cancer. The sample was composed of patients diagnosed with colorectal cancer, assisted at FCECON between April 2024 and August 2024. Nutritional assessment methods were used through a screening form such as the subjective global assessment produced by the patient (ASG-PPP) and body mass index (BMI). Regarding sarcopenia assessment, it was established through calf circumference, SARC-calf screening form and handgrip strength by dynamometry.
This research project was submitted and approved by the Research Ethics Committee of the Federal University of Amazonas 6,648,104, before data collection began. Only patients who agreed to participate in the study by signing the informed consent form were included.

Resultados

The sample included 23 patients, of which 68.2% were male, 54.5% were aged between 50-69 years, and 68.2% lived in urban areas. Regarding lifestyle, 40.9% said they were alcoholics, and 22.7% were smokers. Regarding socioeconomic data, 31.8% had a family income between 1 and 3 minimum wages.
Regarding the presence of a history of cancer in the family, around 90.9% had a family history of cancer in the family.
Regarding nutritional status, based on the body mass index (BMI), 45.5 were eutrophic, and 72.7% were severely malnourished according to the ASG-PPP. And only 6 had sarcopenia.

Conclusões

The analysis revealed that the variables age and sex are relevant, with men having a higher prevalence, as they seek health services with more aggravated symptoms.
It was possible to find a relationship between malnutrition and colorectal cancer, as it is a pathology that leads to muscle catabolic, affecting individuals in any BMI category an the prevalent age group is adults and the elderly.
Next step: Analyze the nutritional status and prevalence of sarcopenia in patients before and after surgery.
