He graduated from the Catanduva School of Medicine in 1987. Specialization in Radiology in 1992 from the American Medical Association and the Brazilian College of Radiology. He holds a Master’s and Ph.D. degrees in Radiology from the University of São Paulo. Post-doctorate studies in “High dose brachytherapy as a radiotherapy boost” at the A.C.Camargo Cancer Center in 2011. In 1997, he introduced high dose brachytherapy for the prostate cancer technique in Brazil. Research focus on brachytherapy in head and neck cancer and sarcomas of the extremities.
Currently, his areas of interest are: minimally invasive radiotherapy (brachytherapy), intraoperative radiotherapy, conformal external radiotherapy, IMRT, image guided radiation therapy (IGRT), stereotactic ablative radiotherapy (SART), and stereotactic body radiation therapy (SBRT)
He graduated from the School of Medicine of the University of the State of Guanabara, and completed his Pathology specialization in 1979 from the Brazilian Society of Pathology. He was a full professor of Food and Nutrition at the Mayo Clinic College of Medicine, USA, in 2010. He completed his Ph.D. in Oncology in 2012 from the A.C.Camargo Cancer Center.

He was the chair of the Brazilian Society of Surgical Oncology between 2015 and 2017, leading the acknowledgement of Surgical Oncology as a specialty in Brazil. He is the only Brazilian to chair the Americas Hepato-Pancreato-Biliary Association in 2019-2020 (representing American associations and over 20 countries in the continent). In May 2020, he delivered the Presidential Address at the opening of the Americas Hepato-Pancreato-Biliary Association. The title of his lecture was Shaping the Future of HPB Oncology In the Americas and Precision Surgery for Liver, Pancreas, and Biliary Tract Tumors. He is a member of the editorial board of several scientific journals. He is the founder of the Brazilian Journal of Oncology and the Brazilian Week of Oncology. Chair and organizer of many scientific national and international conferences. Author of over 100 publications, consensus papers and international book chapters, he is also the main editor of books in Gastrointestinal Oncology. He has been a speaker in several Oncology and Abdominal Tumor Surgery conferences and events in more than twenty countries.

Dr. Kowalski graduated from the Federal University of Paraná. He finished his residency program at the A.C.Camargo Cancer Center in 1983. It was during his residency program that he learned more about head and neck surgery. He holds a Master’s and Ph.D. degrees in Otolaringology from the Federal University of São Paulo (UNIFESP). Dr. Kowalski is fascinated by head and neck because these systems require complex surgeries that require sophisticated oncological and reconstructive techniques.
He has led the Head and Neck Center at the A.C.Camargo Cancer Center since 1990. It is a center of international excellence in treatment and research, with cure rates of approximately 60%. The center’s experience for treating mouth tumors is comparable to that from the Memorial Sloan Kettering, New York, one of the world’s largest oncology centers.
